ASCO 2026: What the latest cancer research means for patients and families

July 1, 2026

Every year, the world’s leading cancer experts gather to share the latest breakthroughs in cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting.
For patients and families, these research updates offer hope and provide a glimpse into the future of cancer care. While not every study immediately changes the way cancer is treated, many of the findings presented at ASCO help shape tomorrow’s standards of care.
At Arizona Center for Cancer Care (AZCCC), our physicians remain at the forefront of these advancements, bringing the latest evidence-based treatments and personalized care to patients across Arizona.

The Future of Cancer Care is Personalized
One of the biggest themes from ASCO 2026 was the continued move toward personalized medicine.
Rather than treating every patient the same way, physicians are increasingly using:
  • Biomarker testing
  • Genetic and genomic testing
  • Tumor characteristics
  • Cancer stage
  • Previous treatments
  • Overall patient health
To develop treatment plans tailored specifically to each individual.
For some patients, this means access to innovative targeted therapies. For others, it may mean avoiding treatments like chemotherapy when research shows they are unlikely to provide additional benefit.

Key Highlights from ASCO 2026

Pancreatic Cancer

Researchers reported encouraging results from a new oral targeted therapy that significantly improved survival for patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer whose disease had progressed after previous treatment.

This breakthrough offers new hope for a cancer that has historically had limited treatment options.

Breast Cancer
A major study demonstrated how genomic testing can help identify patients with early-stage, hormone receptor-positive breast cancer who may safely avoid chemotherapy while maintaining excellent outcomes.
This represents another important step toward reducing unnecessary treatment and minimizing long-term side effects.

Prostate Cancer
Patients with high-risk localized prostate cancer experienced improved outcomes when an additional targeted hormone-blocking medication was given before and after surgery.
The study showed longer periods without cancer recurrence, highlighting the value of combining therapies for higher-risk disease.

Lung Cancer
Several exciting studies reinforced the importance of biomarker testing.
Researchers found that patients whose tumors carried specific genetic changes benefited from targeted therapies that dramatically reduced the risk of cancer returning after treatment.
Additional studies also showed promising improvements in survival using newer immunotherapy combinations for advanced lung cancer.

Triple-Negative Breast Cancer
New research suggests that antibody-drug conjugates combined with immunotherapy may help patients with advanced triple-negative breast cancer remain in remission longer than current standard treatments.

Liver Cancer
Researchers demonstrated improved outcomes by combining immunotherapy with liver-directed treatments for selected patients with liver cancer.
While these combination approaches showed greater effectiveness, they also reinforced the importance of careful patient selection and close monitoring for side effects.

Rare Sarcomas
Patients with recurrent dedifferentiated liposarcoma, a rare form of cancer, experienced significantly delayed disease progression with a targeted therapy compared to previous treatment options.
Continued research into rare cancers helps expand treatment opportunities for patients who have historically had fewer options available.

What Does This Mean for Patients?
These studies reinforce one important message:

Cancer care is becoming more precise, more personalized, and more effective.
Advances in genomic testing, targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and precision medicine are helping physicians make more informed treatment decisions while improving quality of life for many patients.

However, every patient’s situation is unique. Not every new treatment is appropriate for every diagnosis, and some therapies are still undergoing additional study or regulatory review before becoming widely available.
Dr. Wishwdeep Dhillon, Medical Oncologist and Hematologist with HonorHealth Cancer Care, attended the conference and shared his perspective on the promising breakthroughs shaping the future of cancer treatment.

“This year at ASCO, I walked away feeling genuinely hopeful in a way I haven’t felt in a long time. For people with advanced pancreatic cancer, there’s finally a treatment that’s more than doubling survival. In breast cancer, we’re now able to safely spare many patients the harsh side effects of chemotherapy. And for certain lung and prostate cancers, precision therapies are dramatically lowering the chance of the cancer coming back. These aren’t just numbers on a slide—they mean more time with family, fewer difficult days, and real quality of life during treatment.”

Questions to Ask Your Oncology Team

If you’ve recently been diagnosed with cancer or are currently receiving treatment, consider asking your care team:
  • Has my cancer been tested for biomarkers or genomic mutations?
  • Do any of the latest ASCO research findings apply to my diagnosis?
  • Am I a candidate for targeted therapy or immunotherapy?
  • Should I consider participating in a clinical trial?
  • Could these new treatment options affect my current care plan?
Open communication with your oncology team is one of the best ways to ensure your treatment plan reflects the latest advances in cancer care.
