Get in step to promote better health and to fight cancer!

Many studies prove that taking more steps each day – even if you walk at a regular pace – is linked with living longer. For both mental and physical health, walking is highly recommended for heart patients and for cancer patients

Researchers from the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention looked at 4,840 American adults 40 and older who wore tracking devices for up to 7 days. The researchers then followed them through over 5 years of using the National Health Index. They found:

  • Taking 8,000 steps a day was linked with a 51% lower risk of death from any cause compared with taking 4,000 steps a day.
  • Taking 12,000 steps a day was linked with a 65% lower risk than taking 4,000 steps a day.
  • There was no significant difference in death risk based on how fast people walked, only on the number of steps they took.

While health experts have long known that physical activity is good for you, previously unknown was the rough number of how many steps per day you need to take to lower your mortality risk or whether stepping at a higher intensity makes a difference. Now the average person, regardless of age, has an easy understanding for a healthy amount of steps each day.

Even More Positive Findings

The American Cancer Society recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity (such as walking) each day. This is intense enough exercise to make you breathe harder and your heart beat faster. For people who haven’t exercised in a while, it makes sense to start slowly and build up gradually.

Walking for exercise can help you stay at a healthy weight, strengthen your bones and muscles, and improve your balance and coordination. Another big proven advantage to walking is better mental health due to reduced stress.  Another advantage to exercising is that it can replace some of the time you spend just sitting or lying around. Evidence is growing that sitting time, no matter how much exercise you get when you aren’t sitting, increases the likelihood of developing several types of cancer, as well as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.
